Meah She’arim is home to an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. The name was chosen because on the day the settlement was decided 1874 the Torah portion for the day included the words meah she’arim, which comes from Genesis 26:12, “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year a hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.” This was considered a mark of God’s favor on the decision.
